If you read my post on bulletproof coffee, you know that I am a HUGE coffee lover. I could drink it all day (and I have before). But when it came to drinking cold coffee I immediately gagged to myself. I know the times I took too long to drink my hot cup and it turned cold I would spit it back out. So I could not understand why everyone was so infatuated with getting iced coffee at Dunkin' Donuts (or Starbucks if that's in your area). Seemed gross to me.
Then someone explained that it was just coffee with ice thrown in it. It was brewed COLD. I was still skeptical. Sounded completely weird to me. But one day I was at Dunkin' and thought "what the hell". So I got one, regular creamer and sugar free caramel flavor. Just a heads up.... Dunkin's sugar free flavors are NOT.... I repeat NOT...sweet at all! So I had to use my packets of Stevia I carry with me to sweeten it. Kind of annoying.
Enter Sheetz.... If you live near Western PA you know what a gem Sheetz is. For those who do not know, it's a gas station/convenience store/fast food that is pretty decent and fresh. I have family that comes from other states and are just amazed that people are getting good salads from a gas station lol. What can I say, Western PA is a breed all its own. But I love it here. And I fit in. So not sure what that says about me.
ANYWAY (see how off track I get?)... Sheetz has a "made to order" option on specialty beverages, cold brew coffee being one of them. And I actually prefer theirs because while they only have two sugar free flavors (SF caramel and SF vanilla), theirs are sweet so no need to add my own sugar. Much more convenient. And I always get caramel flavoring anyway.
But buying coffee daily like that can add up cost wise and add in unneeded carbs (My medium cold brew with lite cream and SF caramel is 5 net carbs). So I thought, why can't I make my own. Oh, Pinterest gods, show me the way.....
It is so easy!!! And I know that I am not going to go over my carbs (mine has less than 2 net carbs in my 20oz tumbler). So here is the recipe:
COLD BREW AT HOME
1 glass container (I use a mason jar, as shown in the pics)
1/4 cup scoop of ground coffee
1 Coffee filter
1 Colander
1 container to pour brewed coffee into
Cold brew is done in the fridge and takes 8-12 hours. I put mine in my fridge around 8pm and take it out around 7am.
|
Put 1/4 Cup scoop of coffee in a mason jar |
|
Fill with cold water, shake to mix, and place in fridge overnight (8-12 hrs) |
|
Next morning |
|
Colander on a measuring bowl with a coffee filter |
|
Pour in and let the brewed coffee filter out the grounds |
|
COLD BREWED COFFEE!!! |
Now, if your one of "those people" who like black coffee then you add some ice to a cup, pour your coffee, and you're good to go. But for us who like our coffee to be sweet and creamy, here is what I add into mine:
|
1 TBPS HWC and 1 TBSP SF Caramel Syrup |
|
I pour my coffee back into the mason jar to store in my fridge.
Put the lid on and shake to mix. |
Seriously, how simple is this?!? And if you are at Walmart, grab yourself an Ozark Trail tumbler (20oz is like $8 and 30oz is $10). Those things are amazing especially for the price! They keep hot liquids hot and cold liquids cold for an insane amount of time. I take my iced coffee to work at at 5pm I still had ice. So from around 7:30am to 5pm half the ice I put in my tumbler had not melted.
|
One mason jar is in the tumbler the second will sit in my fridge until I come home from work.

I intend on getting other sugar free syrups and trying different things. I was looking on the Torani website and noticed they had a Sugar Free Pumpkin Pie syrup (yes I'm a basic bitch who loves pumpkin everything) along with like 30 other flavors (I didn't count).
Also, you don't HAVE to use heavy whipping cream. You can use unsweetened almond milk, half and half, or any sugar free liquid creamer. If you don't want to use a flavor syrup you can use stevia. Liquid stevia would probably mix better in the cold liquid. There are so many options. So, try this. Try them. Give me some feedback, folks. I would love to hear some thoughts and ideas. Take care.
